Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is thought to be
an autoimmune disease that affects the
central nervous system (CNS). The CNS
consists of the brain, spinal cord, and
the optic nerves. Surrounding and
protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS
is a fatty tissue called myelin, which
helps nerve fibers conduct electrical
impulses.
In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas,
leaving scar tissue called sclerosis.
These damaged areas are also known as
plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve
fiber itself is damaged or broken.
People with MS can expect one of four
clinical courses of disease, each of
which might be mild, moderate, or
severe.
MS does not discriminate against race,
sex or ethnic background. Approximately
400,000 Americans acknowledge having MS,
and every week about 200 people are
diagnosed with the disease. Worldwide,
MS may affect 2.5 million individuals.
The sole purpose of the National
Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the
devastating effects of MS. It sounds
plain and simple, but just like the
thousands of other diseases that affect
the human race, countless hours of
research is needed to first understand
the disease before a cure can be found.
Of course we all know that research
takes two critical resources – time and
money.
Since 1946, the Society has invested
more than $460 million in search of the
cause and cure of multiple sclerosis.
This year, the Society will spend some
$35 million to fund over 300 new and
ongoing MS research projects. This
investment is paying off: new treatments
and better methods of diagnosis,
rehabilitation, and symptom management
are now available to all those with MS.

race for a cure, please visit

The MS Charity Golf Classic committee is personally
affected by this disease as Shelli (Berkihiser) Lusty, Greg’s wife, was diagnosed with MS in
1997 while in her early twenties.
Although Shelli (Berkihiser) Lusty has the disease, she has
truly reaped the benefits of the
research to date and is fortunate enough
to keep the disease in check, relatively
speaking, while leading a fairly normal
life. We want others with MS to have the
same opportunities that Shelli’s been
given and would ultimately like to
witness the day a cure is discovered.
With that, we will be donating all the
proceeds for the inaugural MS Charity
Golf Classic to the
Allegheny District
Chapter of the National MS Society.
